News & Exclusive Preview

Have a Good Summer:

I’m going to take someof my own advice, and press pause on my blog for a few weeks this summer. Regular postings will return in the fall. In the meantime, I’m pressing to meet deadlines, will transition to other projects, and will hopefully spend some time with my family while the sun is out, (as I encourage y’all to do, too).

Thanks to everyone for reading this blog this year, particularly my top three commenters, Tobi, Yuri, and Kaylee.

Much appreciated, all.

Welcome New Syndicates!

Welcome two new syndicates to the Men Who Lead Well family.

Select essays of mine will run at Patheos in a compilation blog titled A FEW GROWN MEN along with fellow writers James Pence, Rick Johnson, and Jonathan McKee.

Then, the good folks at Art of Manliness (a truly excellent e-zine), are set to run about one post a month of mine. See the first essay HERE.

Exclusive Preview:

People have asked what I’ve been up to this past year.

It’s been a year of literary collaborations, and I want to give you a quick preview of one of the exciting books on the horizon.

VOICES OF THE PACIFIC (Penguin/ Berkley Caliber, May 2013), by Adam Makos with Marcus Brotherton

Adam Makos (co-founder of Valor Studios) and I teamed up this past year to develop the much-awaited oral history project featuring the WWII Marines featured in the HBO miniseries The Pacific.

These veterans—Marines who fought in the Pacific—are national treasures. They endured unspeakable horrors, came home to America, and more than sixty-seven years later are still alive today.

In this book you’ll experience the shock they felt as boys when Pearl Harbor was bombed. You’ll feel the jolt of boot camp as civilian civility is thrown out the window to turn boys into men. You’ll sail with them to the island of Guadalcanal for their harrowing first battles as Marines as they square off against a seasoned and vicious foe.

They’ll take you to Australia for a raucous R&R, then back to the gunfire in the rainforests of Cape Gloucester, the coral ridges of Peleliu, the black sands of Iwo Jima, and the mud of Okinawa.

In the end, they’ll bring you home, as they once returned, triumphant, joyous, yet tormented by the loss of so many friends.

Watch for pre-order availability of VOICES OF THE PACIFIC in upcoming months.

Book is slated for a May 2013 release.

Thanks again everybody. Leave a comment below and let me know anything you've liked or found helpful about this blog, or anything you'd like to see more of in upcoming posts.

Marcus,

What an honor to be recognized as a top commenter on your blog. Thank you for mentioning me! I've truly enjoyed reading your thought provoking blogs each week. The intellectual stimulation and the friendly, informal attitude were such a refreshing break from my daily routine.

I can definitely understand your need for time off from your blog. I've found myself having less time to read it during the summer with my daughter out of school and I'm not even the one writing it or collaborating on a book!

I can't wait to read Voices of the Pacific. I know very little about the Pacific and now I'll have the opportunity to discover it through your compelling writing. I've tried reading WWII books by other authors, but none of them capture the essence like yours.

On another note, my brother and family just moved to Bainbridge, Island so I know more than ever the weather is just beautiful up your way. Enjoy and take care. I look forward to seeing your blog again in the fall.

The book that will come out sounds great and interesting as well, also looking forward to read that one.
For now, enjoy your summer!

Marcus, thank you very much for naming me in your recent blog entry. But I don't deserve it, because you do! You do make us comment your weekly awaited blog posts. If your posts wouldn't be that great like they are, we wouldn't post as much as we do. So thank YOU! I'm looking forward to fall-season this year. You well deserve your time off! Enyjoy it my friend! We do enjoy life too less!

The project you are talking about sounds great. Adam is a nice guy and he does big efforts to honor the vets, so this thing is going to be great! Although I know too sparse about the Pacifc actions. There are so many books I want to read about the US Paratroopers in Europe, so it will be hard to find time to read about the pacific. But if I need a brake from that history part I will definitely read this book. Anyhow sure enough I will buy it when it comes out and will ask your signature. But I can not guarantee to read it right away.
All the best to you and take care.

Hi Marcus, I wrote an email to you once, and I check your blog every Wednesday (though without leaving comments). As I am also a faithful reader of AoM, I read your post recently there, and I am thrilled to know that you will be contributing on a regular basis. (I got to know your blog through AoM). I just want to tell you that I appreciate your integrity and the way you tackle the topic of leadership in your blog. Keep up the good work! May God give you rest during the summer!
My best to you, from Québec
